  • Salvador Allende

    Directed by Patricio Guzmán

    salvadorallende

    Watch Now!

    1 Hour and 40 Minutes

"On September 11, 1973, he was overthrown by a military coup... The dictator of Pinochet crushed that democracy which had perfected itself over two centuries, and destroyed, day after day, for 18 years, the country I knew. Thousands of Chileans were murdered and tortured and hundreds of thousands went into exile."

This homage that Guzmán pays to Chile's ex-president reminds us of the radiant dream that a generation lived (where politics and utopia were synonyms). The piece is direct. It has no explicative or demonstrative information; rather, it offers a space for reflection that is human and personal and at the same time historical. The outcome is a generous film. "Salvador Allende" sold 120,000 tickets in France, with 34 copies in 5 months (from September 2004 to January 2005). It premiered in theaters in: Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Mexico, Austria, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile (50,000 viewers). (Excerpt from main website)

Santa's Workshop: Inside China's Slave Labour Toy Factories

Directed By Lotta Ekelund & Kristina Bjurling

    santas

    Watch Now!

    33 Minutes

"Sometimes we have no choice, we work till dawn. When you work all night you become dizzy and your eyes hurt because you can't take any breaks."

SANTA'S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment.

Low labour costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment.

The European (and American) buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade? (Excerpt from video.google.com)

    Sartre: The Road to Freedom

    Directed by Louise Wardle

    sartre

    Watch Now!

    48 Minutes

"To be told, 'you are responsible for the period of history that you are living in. You have not only the right to choose, but the duty to choose and if you are now surrounded by poverty, by war, by oppression, by cruelty - that is what you have chosen.'"

Sartre was the leading advocate of atheistic existentialism in France but he was also interested in the novel, drama, literary criticism and politics.

He is best remembered for his philosophical works and his idea of communistic existentialism which he expressed in novels and plays such as his debut novel Nausea (1939), which depicted man adrift in a godless universe, hostage to his own freedom.

He had a long term affair with the feminist philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir, and together they were at the centre of French intellectual life from the late 1920s onwards.

His great philosophical work is Being and Nothingness (1956). Like Kierkegaard and Heidegger, Sartre emphasised the burden of individual personal freedom: that although we can’t escape the fact of our situation, we are free to change it. He drew a distinction between the unconscious and the conscious.

After the Second World War, during which he fought for the Resistance, he became increasingly interested in Marxism and his involvement with the French Communist party was part of his desire to overcome the economic and social "structures of choice" which he found restricting. His main contribution to Marxism is Critique of Dialectical Reason (1960).

Sartre refused the 1964 Nobel Prize in literature on "personal grounds", but is later said to have accepted it. (Excerpt from official website)

    Satoyama - Japan's Secret Watergardens

    Directed by Masumi Mizunuma

    satoyama

    Watch Now!

    48 Minutes

"Each home has a built in pool or water tank that lies partly inside, partly outside its’ walls… A continuous stream of spring water is piped right into a basin, so freshwater is always available. People rinse out pots in the tank and clean their freshly picked vegetables. If they simply pour the food scraps back in the water, they risk polluting the whole village supply. However, carp can scour out even the greasy or burnt pans. They do the washing up in Satoyama villages. This traditional arrangement is called the riverside method. It’s used all over Japan. Cleaned up by the carp, the tank water eventually rejoins the channel."

Imagine a realm where the season's rhythms rule, where centuries of agriculture and fishing have reshaped the land, yet where people and nature remain in harmony. Sangoro Tanaka lives in just such a paradise. At 83, he's the guardian of one of Japan's secret watergardens.

Over a thousand years, towns and villages have developed a unique system to make springs and water part of their homes. From inside their houses, the stream pours into Japan’s largest fresh water lake, near the ancient capital of Kyoto. This is a habitat so precious, the Japanese have a special word for it, satoyama, villages where mountains give way to plains. They are exceptional environments essential to both the people who maintain them and to the wildlife that now share them. (Excerpt from film)

"In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavat Geeta, since whose composition years of the gods have elapsed, and in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial..." –Henry David Thoreau

A vast number of statements and materials presented in the ancient Vedic literatures can be shown to agree with modern scientific findings and they also reveal a highly developed scientific content in these literatures. The great cultural wealth of this knowledge is highly relevant in the modern world. Techniques used to show this agreement include: - Marine Archaeology of underwater sites (such as Dvaraka) - Satellite imagery of the Indus-Sarasvata River system - Carbon and Thermoluminiscence Dating of archaeological artifacts - Scientific Verification of Scriptural statements - Linguistic analysis of scripts found on archaeological artifacts - A Study of cultural continuity in all these categories. Scientists Under Attack: Genetic Engineering in the Magnetic Field of Money

    Directed by Bertram Varhaag

    scientists-under-attack

    Watch Now!

    58 Minutes

"The attack on scientists is very well structured by the biotech industry. It's systematic. It's worldwide. It's very coordinated. It's part of the way that they do business. So anywhere in the world, at anytime, if someone finds a problem, they are jumped on. If the problem is really severe, they get jumped on even more, whenever there is something that comes up that can threaten this biotechnology empire." -Jeffrey Smith

"[S]cientists under Attack" is a documentary thriller on the theme of genetic engineering and the independence of science. We exemplary show the fate of scientists - such as Árpád Pusztai and Ignacio Chapela - who do research in the field of genetic engineering and who were punished hard through character assassination and by withdrawing their means of research from them. They are only examples for many important scientists whose careers have been ruined. Statements of scientists prove that 95 % of the scientists in the field of genetic engineering are paid by the industry. Only 5% are independent. The loss of freedom of thought and democracy is obvious. May the public - may we all - still trust the scientists? (Excerpt from main website)

    Watch Now!

    1 Hour and 28 Minutes

"So I imagined all of these DJs from outerspace and what would their style be. Since earth is kind of like a primitive planet, what about the more advanced civilizations? How does their music sound? So I would imagine what they were doing and that’s how I would come up with my ideas" –DJ Qbert

SCRATCH is a feature-length film/ DVD that explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ's began extending breaks on their party records (which helped inspire break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching and "beat-juggling" vinyl, to its recent explosion as a musical movement called "turntablism," it's a story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who are radically changing the way we hear, play and create music.

The film features some of the world's best DJ's, whether they're famous for solo scratching, competing in international DJ battles, playing for rap artists, or just rocking parties with the most insane records ever dug up. Check out dynamic performances and interviews with DJ's Q-bert, Mix Master Mike (of the Beastie Boys) Rob Swift and the X-ecutioners, Cut Chemist & NuMark (of Jurassic 5), DJ Craze, The Bullet Proof Space Travelers, Babu (of Dilated Peoples), DJ Krush, DJ Premier (Gang Starr), and others, along with "old-school" innovators like Afrika Bambaataa and GrandWizard Theodore (who is widely acknowledged as having invented the idea of scratching vinyl in the first place). "In the jungles of Colombia, a baffling discovery raises the mysterious question: Is it possible ancient cultures experienced real flight hundreds of years ago?”

Born on April 14th, 1935, in Zofingen, Switzerland, Erich von Daniken was educated at the College St-Michel in Fribourg, where already as a student he occupied his time with the study of the ancient holy writings. While managing director of a Swiss 5-Star Hotel, he wrote his first book, Chariots of the Gods, which was an immediate bestseller in the United States, Germany, and later in 38 other countries.

In the United States, Erich von Daniken won instant fame as a result of the television special "In Search of Ancient Astronauts," based upon his first book. In 1993, the German television station SAT-1 started a twenty-five part TV series with and by Erich von Daniken, entitled "Auf den Spuren der All-Machtigen" (Pathways of the Gods). In 1996, the American TV company ABC/Kane produced a one-hour special, filmed all over the world, entitled Chariots of the Gods - The Mysteries Continue. This film was broadcast on the ABC network on September 26th 1996. In 1996/97 ABC/Kane produced another documentary with Erich von Daniken (seen on the Discovery Channel). The Secret, which is described as a self-help film, [2][3] uses a documentary format to present the "Law of Attraction." This law is the "secret" that, according to the tagline, "has traveled through centuries to reach you." The film features short dramatized experiences and interviews of a team of "personal transformation specialists", "spiritual messengers", "feng shui masters", and moneymaking "experts".[4] As put forth in the film, the "Law of Attraction" principle posits that people's feelings and thoughts attract real events in the world into their lives; from the workings of the cosmos to interactions among individuals in their physical, emotional, and professional affairs. The film also suggests that there has been a strong tendency by those in positions of power to keep this central principle hidden from the public. The Secret Government: The Constitution in Crisis

    Directed By Bill Moyers

    secretgovernment

    Watch Now!

    1 Hour and 26 Minutes

"Secrecy is the freedom that zealots dream of; no watchman to check the door, no accountant to check the books, no judge to check the law. The secret government has no constitution. The rules it follows are the rules it makes up."

This is the full length 90 min. version of Bill Moyer's 1987 scathing critique of the criminal subterfuge carried out by the Executive Branch of the United States Government to carry out operations which are clearly contrary to the wishes and values of the American people. The ability to exercise this power with impunity is facilitated by the National Security Act of 1947. The thrust of the exposé is the Iran-Contra arms and drug-running operations which flooded the streets of our nation with crack cocaine. The significance of the documentary is probably greater today in 2007 than it was when it was made. We now have a situation in which these same forces have committed the most egregious terrorist attack on US soil and have declared a fraudulent so-called "War on Terror". The ruling regime in the US who have conducted the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, are now banging the war drum against Iran. We have the PATRIOT act which has stripped us of many of our basic civil rights justified by the terror of 9/11 which is their own doing. (Excerpt from video.google.com)

    The Secret Life of Plants

    Directed by Walon Green

    secretlifeofplants

    Watch Now!

    1 Hour and 36 Minutes

"It means even on the lower levels of life, there is a profound consciousness or awareness that bonds all things together." –Cleve Backster

Published in 1973, The Secret Life of Plants was written by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. It is described as "A fascinating account of the physical, emotional, and spiritual relations between plants and man."

Essentially, the subject of the book is the idea that plants may be sentient, despite their lack of a nervous system and a brain. This sentience is observed primarily through changes in the plant's conductivity, as through a polygraph, as pioneered by Cleve Backster. The book also contains a summary of Goethe's theory of plant metamorphosis.

That said, this book is about much more than just plants; it delves quite deeply into such topics as the aura, psychophysics, orgone, radionics, kirlian photography, magnetism / magnetotropism, bioelectrics, dowsing, and the history of science.

It was the basis for the 1979 documentary of the same name, with a soundtrack especially recorded by Stevie Wonder. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

    1 Hour and 53 Minutes

"In the book version of The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's slippers are made of silver as opposed to in the film version, where Dorothy's slippers are made of rubber. You take away the silver slippers on the gold or yellow brick road and all the other symbolism tends to be lost." -Dr. Quentin Taylor

It is well known in economics academia that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum in 1900 is loaded with powerful symbols of monetary reform which were the core of the Populist movement and the 1896 and 1900 president bid of Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

The yellow brick road (gold standard), the emerald city of Oz (greenback money), even Dorothy’s silver slippers (changed to ruby slippers for the movie version) were the symbol of Baum’s and Bryan’s belief that adding silver coinage to gold would provide much needed money to a depression-strapped, 1890s America.

We believe Baum’s symbols represent the only solution to relieve the growing economic hardship here in America – and the rest of the world. Practically speaking, 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the 1939 MGM release of the The Wizard of Oz movie, so interest will be very high. Even Oz websites put up by kids get millions of hits. "In today’s value, the Nazis at the heart of the NASA Space Program were given more than 600 billion dollars. All NASA had to do was announce a new space project and the money was handed over so that the American government could save face in the Cold War."

SECRET SPACE takes you deep inside the dark occult world of NAZI Germany, where Jews and ex-French Resistance fighters were used as slave labour to develop rocket-based weapons such as the V2 and the V1 'Doodlebug' - the forerunner of today's 'Cruise' missile.

We explain how ex-SS Nazis were brought to America by the CIA under 'Project Paperclip' and given senior posts at NASA. We also see how NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasedena was set-up by Jack Parsons - a rocket engineer who was a disciple of Aleister Crowley. From the late 1940s onwards, an unholy alliance of O.T.O devotees, NAZIs and senior 33rd degree Freemasons dupe the American taxpayer of billions of dollars and fake several moon missions in order to further their work on secret 'black budget' operations - a series of secret space programmes designing space vehicles and weapons systems to thwart attacks by alien craft... For the first time on film we see the 'Baby Shuttle' - a small space shuttle which fits inside the payload of the existing space shuttle and is then released into outer space for covert operations.

...It sounds incredible - but SECRET SPACE contains a wealth of documents, photos and footage which proves that all this and more has come to pass.

SECRET SPACE exposes the fact that nearly all the first American astronauts into space were high ranking 32 and 33rd degree Freemasons. And that the brother of one of the Apollo Mission managers was appointed Sovereign Grand Commander of all Freemasons in America as a 'thankyou' for engineering the fake Apollo moonshots of 1969. On November 8th...there is a perfect Star of David, that is a star tetrahedral that will be formed astrologically between the planets and near stars...An absolutely perfect pattern that shows up in nature...in a grand, grand scale. The number one truth that stands out about all of this is that the Universe is a hologram and that it manifests. There is no other explanation on how this perfect form should show up, a perfect balanced form of a star tetrahedral, unless there's something very massive at work behind the scene. There is a pattern to all of creation."

    Sex Crimes and the Vatican

    Produced By Sarah Macdonald

    sexvatican

    Watch Now!

    39 Minutes

"The church knew he was a child abuser. Instead of reporting O'Brady, the church hid him from the authorities. No mistake, a part of a secret church directive. The man responsible for enforcing it was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVI."

Created in 1962, a now infamous document was issued in secret to bishops. Called Crimen Sollicitationis, it outlined procedures to be followed by bishops when dealing with allegations of child abuse, homosexuality and bestiality by members of the clergy. It swore all parties involved to secrecy on pain of excommunication from the Catholic Church.

This document was reissued in 2001 by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and sent to all bishops. Yet rather than ordering more openness and cooperation with the authorities as demanded by both law enforcers and the victims, he reiterated its policies and ensured that the Code of Silence be applied to all cases of child abuse involving a priest. Cardinal Ratzinger also instructed that all cases should now be referred to his office directly and that he would maintain 'exclusive competence' over the handling of allegations. This is the Catholic Church's policy to this day and Cardinal Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI.

The policy laid out in the above document has led to systemic failure by the result that a significant number of priest have, in effect, been allowed to abuse again, and further children have been put at risk.

As the documentary explores, Colm O'Gorman is the man responsible for breaking open decades of abuse by Catholic Priests in Ireland in the BAFTA award-winning BBC special Suing the Pope. He links international 'systemic evidence' to argue the Vatican has a policy to cover up the sexual abuse of thousands of children across the world.

In Sex Crimes and the Vatican O'Gorman explores four separate cases internationally of widespread clerical abuse, putting the Roman Catholic Church on trial for the reckless endangerment of children. O'Gorman raises the question, 'Is the Church in default of its obligation as a signatory to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child?' (Excerpt from main website)

    1 Hour and 27 Minutes

"If true freedom were readily available and could be found without great effort, how is it possible that it should be neglected by almost everyone? But all things excellent are as difficult as they are rare." –B. de Spinoza

SEX, DRUGS & DEMOCRACY is Jonathan Blank's award-winning, indie cult film, which grossed over $1 million in its art-house run, and is now available on video and DVD.

The Dutch idea of a free society includes a legalized sex industry, the open sale of marijuana and hashish, total equality for gays, distribution of clean syringes and methadone to addicts, and government financed abortion, euthanasia and sex education for schoolchildren. Has this unconventional approach changed Holland from a land of tulips, windmills and wooden shoes into a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah? Apparently not. In Holland rates of drug use, addiction and AIDS transmission are extremely low, and the Dutch have the lowest rates of abortion, teenage pregnancy and imprisonment in the world.

Filmed over the course of many months spent in Holland by writer/director Jonathan Blank, the provocative documentary has revealing interviews with everyone from government officials, police, clergy and scientists to club owners, drug dealers and prostitutes and outrageous scenes from hash bars, brothels, nightclubs, prisons and rallies. The outstanding soundtrack features music from American and Dutch indie bands. (Excerpt from main website)

Sexy Inc. - Our Children Under Influence

    Directed by Sophie Bissonnette

    sexyinc

    Watch Now!

    35 Minutes

"[Y]ou can see a sudden change about five or six years ago when we started being increasingly bombarded with sexually suggestive messages and children depending on their age of course receive them as if they were normal. When you're dealing with children and teenagers in particular, they are at an age where they want to fit in with the norm. They want to resemble their idols. They want to be popular. That’s a key concept in adolescence. Well, now to be popular, you have to be hot. You have to give off sexual energy, but when you’re fourteen years old or even eleven, that’s easier said than done. So they start imitating, dressing the same way, and doing the same movements – like when they dance. There’s also the question of fashion. At the moment, fashion for kids is alarming on some levels because clothing has been eroticized, especially for little girls." –Francine Duquet, sexologist

Are children being pushed prematurely into adulthood? Sophie Bissonnette's documentary Sexy inc. Nos enfants sous influence analyzes the hypersexualization of our environment and its noxious effects on young people. Psychologists, teachers and school nurses criticize the unhealthy culture surrounding our children, where marketing and advertising are targeting younger and younger audiences and bombarding them with sexual and sexist images. These stereotypes treat girls of all ages as sexual objects, and exercise a damaging the effect on their identities. Because they see degrading images of sexuality on the Internet, some children confuse sexual relations with pornography. Sexy inc. suggests various ways of countering hypersexualization and the eroticization of childhood and invites us to rally against this worrying phenomenon. (Excerpt from main website)

    1 Hour and 18 Minutes

"What I'm trying to do in 'The Shock Doctrine' is tell an alternative history of how this savage stream of pure capitlaism that we've been living, capitalism unrestrained, came to dominate the world." -Naomi Klein

THE SHOCK DOCTRINE is a feature documentary based on Naomi Klein's bestselling book of the same name. THE SHOCK DOCTRINE is a gripping and incisive deconstruction of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world: through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries. THE SHOCK DOCTRINE radically challenges the myth that the global free market triumphed on the wings of democracy.

Both the film and the book argue that governments of the world overexploit natural disasters, economic crises and wars with the very aim of pushing through radical free market policies. Naomi Klein calls this “disaster capitalism.”

Political leaders have turned to brutality and repression in order to crush protests against their own agendas of privatization, deregulation and tax cuts. The consequence is often catastrophic for ordinary people and hugely beneficial to big corporations. (Excerpt from main website)

    1 Hour and 32 Minutes

"Freedom of speech is fine but by God you don't do it outside of the country and you don't do it in mass publicly"

The film opens by reviewing the Dixie Chicks' status before the London show. They had sold more albums in the United States than any other female band in history and were at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart with their new single "Travelin' Soldier", a sensitive depiction of a soldier's life during the Vietnam War era. The film then shows the London concert in an atmosphere of dramatic opposition to the War in Iraq; earlier that day, approximately 1 million people had collected at a public demonstration in London against the war. During the concert, lead singer Natalie Maines tells the audience the band does not support the war in Iraq and conveys that they are ashamed that President Bush is from Texas. When the media in London publishes the remarks, conservative groups in the U.S. rallied against the Chicks and a firestorm of criticism followed. The film conveys the open hostility directed at the band and their reaction. The band is not sure if they should "shut up and sing" or stand by their convictions and let more sparks fly. They end up standing by their comments. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

"Keeping people hopeless and pessimistic - see I think there are two ways in which people are controlled - first of all frighten people and secondly demoralize them." –Tony Benn

The words "health care" and "comedy" aren't usually found in the same sentence, but in Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore's new movie 'SiCKO,' they go together hand in (rubber) glove.

Opening with profiles of several ordinary Americans whose lives have been disrupted, shattered, and—in some cases—ended by health care catastrophe, the film makes clear that the crisis doesn't only affect the 47 million uninsured citizens—millions of others who dutifully pay their premiums often get strangled by bureaucratic red tape as well.

After detailing just how the system got into such a mess (the short answer: profits and Nixon), we are whisked around the world, visiting countries including Canada, Great Britain and France, where all citizens receive free medical benefits. Finally, Moore gathers a group of 9/11 heroes – rescue workers now suffering from debilitating illnesses who have been denied medical attention in the US. He takes them to a most unexpected place, and in addition to finally receiving care, they also engage in some unexpected diplomacy. (Excerpt from main website)

"We like to think that in America those who seek the truth will be respected, even honored. But in the case of TWA flight 800, those who did were ignored and even reviled."

This documentary proves that the U.S. government-including the FBI and DOJ-are totally corrupt and involved in serious felony crime and the outrageous cover-up of truth concerning the mysterious crash of TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996. As you will see, Flight 800 was actually destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Every allegation made in this film is backed up with facts-none more dramatic than those that come from the Federal government itself. You'll learn what the 736 official eyewitnesses actually saw; why aviators reject the CIA "cartoon" explanation; how the Feds criminally suppressed reporting; the critical witness drawings; the rigged NTSB hearings; the damning radar data and documentation; the altered physical evidence; undeniable proof of explosive residue proving a missile strike; the stinging report from the machinist union; and much more! Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days is an independent documentary film that chronicles six Americans with diabetes who switch to a diet consisting entirely of vegan, organic, uncooked food in order to reverse disease without pharmaceutical medication. The six are challenged to give up meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, soda, junk food, fast food, processed food, packaged food, and even cooked food for 30 days. The film follows each participant's remarkable journey and captures the medical, physical, and emotional transformations brought on by this radical diet and lifestyle change. We witness moments of struggle, support, and hope as what is revealed, with startling clarity, is that diet can reverse disease and change lives.

"General, man is very useful. He can fly and he can kill. But he has one defect: He can think." –Bertolt Brecht

In the 1960’s an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point. And it spread throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected, least of all those in it.  Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile.  And by 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed services. Yet today few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam.

The Vietnam War has been the subject of hundreds of films, both fiction and non-fiction, but this story–the story of the rebellion of thousands of American soldiers against the war–has never been told in film. This is certainly not for lack of evidence. By the Pentagon’s own figures, 503,926 "incidents of desertion” occurred between 1966 and 1971; officers were being "fragged” (killed with fragmentation grenades by their own troops) at an alarming rate; and by 1971 entire units were refusing to go into battle in unprecedented numbers. In the course of a few short years, over 100 underground newspapers were published by soldiers around the world; local and national antiwar GI organizations were joined by thousands; thousands more demonstrated against the war at every major base in the world in 1970 and 1971, including in Vietnam itself; stockades and federal prisons were filling up with soldiers jailed for their opposition to the war and the military. But do you realize that this would mean that you are ingesting pesticide that is more than forty times what an average American would consume?"

The Slow Poisoning of India is a 26-minute documentary film directed by Ramesh Menon and produced by the New Delhi-based The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). It deals with the dangers of excessive use of pesticide in agriculture. India is one of the largest users of pesticide in Asia and also one of the largest manufactures. The toxins have entered into the food chain and into our breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The film showcases startling case studies from Kerala where villagers in Kasaragod district are paying a heavy price as it has been exposed to pesticide spraying for many years. It talks of the health impacts in other parts of India and also on how the magic of the green revolution in Punjab is fading as land and water bodies have been poisoned.

But some farmers are bouncing back into better practices, and this is a silver lining shown towards the end. "Many farmers are now switching from chemcial to organic farming as they see that it is the only way out of getting into a spiralling whirlpool of debt created by the high cost of pesticides. Farmers like Tokia Modu in Warangal are waging a silent biological war against pests and are winning." (Excerpt from IndiaTogether.org)

"So many people in America think this does not affect them. They've been convinced that these programs are only targeted at suspected terrorists. … I think that's wrong. … Our programs are not perfect, and it is inevitable that totally innocent Americans are going to be affected by these programs." –Suzanne Spaulding, former CIA Assistant General Counsel

9/11 has indelibly altered America in ways that people are now starting to earnestly question: not only perpetual orange alerts, barricades and body frisks at the airport, but greater government scrutiny of people's records and electronic surveillance of their communications. The watershed, officials tell FRONTLINE, was the government's shift after 9/11 to a strategy of pre-emption at home -- not just prosecuting terrorists for breaking the law, but trying to find and stop them before they strike.

President Bush described his anti-terrorist measures as narrow and targeted, but a FRONTLINE investigation has found that the National Security Agency (NSA) has engaged in wiretapping and sifting Internet communications of millions of Americans; the FBI conducted a data sweep on 250,000 Las Vegas vacationers, and along with more than 50 other agencies, they are mining commercial-sector data banks to an unprecedented degree.

Even government officials with experience since 9/11 are nagged by anxiety about the jeopardy that a war without end against unseen terrorists poses to our way of life, our personal freedoms. "I always said, when I was in my position running counterterrorism operations for the FBI, 'How much security do you want, and how many rights do you want to give up?'" Larry Mefford, former assistant FBI director, tells Smith. "I can give you more security, but I've got to take away some rights. … Personally, I want to live in a country where you have a common-sense, fair balance, because I'm worried about people that are untrained, unsupervised, doing things with good intentions but, at the end of the day, harm our liberties." "For thousands of years, the way in which you have killed someone is you have hit them with a sword, a sphere, an arrow, a bullet, a bomb. It’s kinetic, you’re killing them by hitting them. And now, all of the sudden, out of nowhere, you have a completely new physical principle being applied in killing people, in which they don’t know that they’re being killed because their skin and body is being heated by high power microwaves or they are being hit by a laser that would have an instantaneous effect." –William Arkin

Al Ghezali reported that he had seen three passengers in a car all dead with their faces and teeth burnt, the body intact, and no sign of projectiles. There were other inexplicable aspects: the terrain where the battle took place was dug up by the American military and replaced with other fresh earth, the bodies that were not hit by projectiles had shrunk to just slightly more than one meter in height.

As in any war, the war in Iraq left us a dreadful gallery of horror, images of mutilations that not even doctors can explain. The witnesses refer to laser weapons, arms with mysterious effects. We do not know what kind of weapons could produce such terrible effects. We tried to learn more about it by asking for interviews to members of companies manufacturing laser and microwave weapons. Yet, the U.S. Defense Department prevented any information from being released to us, they also did not answer, up to the time to almost edited, the questions we have sent them in order to know whether or not experimental weapons had been tested in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We tracked down the Pentagon press conferences from before the beginning of the second Gulf War to see if they spoke about any new weapons being tested. The words of the Secretary of Defense and General Meyers indicated a willingness to try weapons that had never been used before. And the questions from the press about direct energy and microwave weapons made them visibly uncomfortable. (Excerpt from video)

"The past two hundred years in the West have seen staggering increases in wealth and economic opportunity, and yes, there have been no comparable increases in our level of happiness. Despite being so much richer than a few generations ago, we're often more anxious about our importance and achievements than our grandparents were. I call this modern state of restlessness and dissatisfaction, 'status anxiety'." -Mark Rudd

This is a book about an almost universal anxiety that rarely gets mentioned directly: an anxiety about what others think of us; about whether we're judged a success or a failure, a winner or a loser. This is a book about status anxiety.

We care about our status for a simple reason: because most people tend to be nice to us according to the amount of status we have (it is no coincidence that the first question we tend to be asked by new acquaintances is ‘ What do you do?’). With the help of philosophers, artists and writers, the book examines the origins of status anxiety (ranging from the consequences of the French Revolution to our secret dismay at the success of our friends), before revealing ingenious ways in which people have learnt to overcome their worries in their search for happiness. It aims not only to be entertaining, but wise and helpful as well. (Excerpt from main website)

"However you define God, and whether you believe in God or not, the world we live in has been shaped by the universal human conviction that there is more to life than life itself that there is a 'god' shaped hole at the centre of our universe."

Professor Robert Winston presents a definitive three-part documentary series on the history of mankind's quest to understand the nature of God.

The Story of God is an epic journey across continents, cultures and eras exploring religious beliefs from their earliest incarnations, through the development of today's major world faiths and the status of religious faith in a scientific age.

The series examines the roots of religious beliefs in prehistoric societies and the different ways in which humanity's sense of the divine developed. It looks at the divergence between religions that worship a range of deities and those that represent strict monotheism.

The series begins with Professor Winston examining the religions which believe in many different gods and explores why mankind started to believe in God at all.

The answer to that question, says Professor Winston, can be found in the caves where our ancestors first approached their gods and in the fields where people still call on them for help, in the cities where our ancestors have been honoured and in the temples where the gods have been appeased with sacrifices.

"But most of all the answer," says Professor Winston, "lies in the human desire to be united with something bigger than ourselves." (Excerpt from main website)

America is the only country in the industrialized world which does not provide universal health care. Initiatives providing free medical care and social services to the homeless and uninsured population in the United States are very few but are making a remarkable difference in their communities.

In Los Angeles' West Side, teams of health workers bring critical medical services to people who are often averse to seeking treatment: a day filled with unexpected events in the life of a successfully but small initiative that combines free medical care and social services to the homeless and insured and that is making a big difference in their community. Stupid in America: How We Cheat Our Kids

Produced by Deborah Colloton & Mark Golden

"American schools don't teach as well as schools in other countries because they are government monopolies, and monopolies don't have much incentive to compete. In Belgium, by contrast, the money is attached to the kids -- it's a kind of voucher system. Government funds education -- at many different kinds of schools -- but if a school can't attract students, it goes out of business."

"Stupid in America" is a nasty title for a program about public education, but some nasty things are going on in America's public schools and it's about time we face up to it.

Kids at New York's Abraham Lincoln High School told me their teachers are so dull students fall asleep in class. One student said, "You see kids all the time walking in the school smoking weed, you know. It's a normal thing here."

We tried to bring "20/20" cameras into New York City schools to see for ourselves and show you what's going on in the schools, but officials wouldn't allow it.

Washington, D.C., officials steered us to the best classrooms in their district.

We wanted to tape typical classrooms but were turned down in state after state.

Finally, school officials in Washington, D.C., allowed "20/20" to give cameras to a few students who were handpicked at two schools they'd handpicked. One was Woodrow Wilson High. Newsweek says it's one of the best schools in America. Yet what the students taped didn't inspire confidence. (Excerpt from main website)

"There's two styles of graffiti that are trying to, you know, co-exist with each other. But it ain't gonna work like that. Blood Wars, buddy. Blood Wars." –Cap

Style Wars is the legendary hip-hop documentary and a timeless film classic, the indispensable record of a golden age of youthful creativity and exploding hip hop subculture.

Directed and produced by Tony Silver and photographer Henry Chalfant, Style Wars was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival in 1984. New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and numerous other festivals, where it screened with Style Wars :ReVisited, its new companion film, produced from the new 2-disc package recently named Best DVD of the Year by The Onion.

With the abridged one-hour broadcast premiere of Style Wars on PBS and Britain’s Channel Four in 1984, the world received its first full immersion into the phenomenon that had taken over New York City. The urban landscape had been physically transformed by graffiti artists, who invented a new visual language to express both their individuality, and the voice of their community. Style Wars captures the look and feel of New York’s ramshackle subway system as the graffiti writers’ public playground, battleground and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the New York Transit Authority. Meanwhile, MC’s, DJ’s and B-boys were rocking the city with new sounds and new moves, as street corner breakdance battles became performance art. (Excerpt from main website)

On direct media advertising, Pepsi spent more than a billion dollars. To advertise candy, Hershey foods spent a mere 200 million dollars internationally. In it's peak year the '5 a Day Vegetable Campaigns' total advertising budget in all media was a lowly 2 million dollars, 100 times less than just the direct media budget of one candy company."

Super Size Me is an Academy Award-nominated 2004 documentary film, directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock, an American independent filmmaker. It follows a 30-day time period (February 2003) during which Spurlock subsists exclusively on McDonald's fast food and stops exercising regularly. The film documents this lifestyle's drastic effects on Spurlock's physical and psychological well-being and explores the fast food industry's corporate influence, including how it encourages poor nutrition for its own profit. During the filming, Spurlock dined at McDonald's restaurants three times per day, sampling every item on the chain's menu at least once. He consumed an average of 5,000 calories (the equivalent of 9.26 Big Macs) per day during the experiment. (Excerpt from video.google.com)

    Dispatches: Supermarket Secrets

    Watch Now!

    1 Hour and 40 Minutes

"Supermarkets are now so powerful, they've emerged as these incredible oligopolies who can dictate the price they pay and they've sort of wiped out any other outlets; there are no real whole time markets where farmers can say 'ok, if you're not going to pay me properly, I'll take my food somewhere else' because somewhere else doesn't actually exist anymore."

How and what we eat has radically changed over the past few decades with the all-consuming rise of the supermarket. But what price are we paying for the homogenised, cheap and convenient food that supermarkets specialise in? In a two-part programme, journalist Jane Moore investigates how supermarkets have affected the food on our plates and reveals the tell-tale signs that the food we buy may not have been grown in the way we think.

Using a combination of undercover filming and scientific analysis, Supermarket Secrets investigates whether the food on supermarket shelves is really as good as it looks, whether prices are as good as they seem and what happens behind the scenes in the production of supermarket food. "Please don't insult the intelligence of these good people in here by saying that you're interested in being a good neighbor. You are not interested in being a good neighbor. The only thing that your company is interested in is making money. And you don't care what impact you have on the rest of the community or anybody else. So please don't offend our intelligence by pretending otherwise."

Tesco is Britain's favourite supermarket. With 2,000 stores and 15 million customers a week, it's almost twice as big as its nearest rival. Dispatches shows how Tesco could soon become even bigger, and asks if this retail giant is abusing its power.

In The Supermarket That's Eating Britain, Ben Laurance pieces together evidence that reveals the true potential of Tesco's expansion plans. In two thirds of Britain, Tesco is already the dominant supermarket.

Dispatches' information shows how that dominance could become even greater. The programme examines the ways in which Tesco avoids paying tens of millions of pounds in tax by exploiting legal loopholes and using complex networks of companies and partnerships here and overseas.

And Dispatches chronicles the links Tesco has forged with New Labour: the programme examines how Tesco has used its connections to exert influence both at Westminster and with local councillors.

The Supermarket That's Eating Britain hears how: councils feel bullied; MPs complain about being put under pressure; and Tesco uses its financial clout to keep its competitors at bay. (Excerpt from main website)

"My name is Michel Blomgren and my passion is wilderness survival, the art of keeping yourself alive under harsh circumstances."

SURVIVAL: Episode 1 - Five points survival

I illustrate a person who get lost and at the same time go through my 5 points. The episode deals with immobilizing fear, our need for warmth & water, spruce roots as string, fire with fire steel, tinder, feather sticks & fire wood, spruce bows as a bed and smoke signal.

    SURVIVAL: Episode 2 - Starvation

If it's something I maintain to that one can do without in a typical survival situation (shorter than a couple of weeks), it's food. In this episode I get out in nature to starve for one day while I also present my gear in (too much) detail. I also brought a blood glucose meter to measure my blood sugar level. It's revealed that spruce needle tea contains some amount of sugar (although small).

SURVIVAL: Episode 3 - Quest for The Stone

A short episode about fire making with a carbon steel knife, quartz and charred cloth. The episode also demonstrates how to boil water or cook food without a pot. The speech is now in English (or Swenglish rather).

SURVIVAL: Episode 4 - In The Cold of The Night

No shelter, no sleeping bag, no food, just a multitool, a traditional fire making kit, and some spare clothing... in other words: an ordinary weekend after work.

SURVIVAL: Episode 5 - Survival and Abseiling

Me and Johan Forsberg from Nordic Bushcraft starve in the forest during a weekend while attempting to move cross the terrain and abseil/rappel down mountain cliffs. It was rainy and Johan didn't bring a sleeping bag or a proper shelter. We brought very little food, but I still enjoyed the comfort of a bivybag, a sleeping bag, and a sleeping mat which made the night comfortable. (Excerpt from main website)

"Britain has undergone a huge change in the last few years. Since 9/11, the state has developed a very different view of its citizens. New surveillance technologies are penetrating every aspect of our lives and we don't even know it. Across the country, millions of cameras are watching us. The police will soon be able to record every journey we make and soon the state will want all of our fingerprints and iris scans."

Since Tony Blair's New Labour government came to power in 1997, the UK civil liberties landscape has changed dramatically. ASBOs wereintroduced by Section 1 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and first used in 1999. The right to remain silent is no longer universal. Our right to privacy, free from interception of communications has been severely curtailed. The ability to travel without surveillance (or those details of our journeys being retained) has disappeared.

Indeed, as Henry Porter (the Observer journalist famous for his recent email clash with Tony Blair over the paring down of civil liberties) reveals in this unsettling film, our movements are being watched, and recorded, more than ever before.  (Excerpt from main website)

"Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, an additive. And it's a chemical. It's not a natural product, it's a chemical. The molecule is made up of three components. Two are amino acids, the so-called building blocks of protein. One is called Phenylalanine, which is about 50% of the molecule and the other is Aspartic Acid, which is like 40%. And the other 10% is so-called Methyl Ester, which as soon as it’s swallowed becomes free methyl alcohol. Methanol. Wood alcohol, which is a poison. A real poison."

Excellent documentary showing how dangerous artificial sweetner Aspartame is. From its history, to its effects this video is enough to shock anyone into really looking at there food labels next time they shop. Aspartame is a toxic food that came into the world as an investment by Donald Rumsfeld, while ignoring the deadly effects the tests showed. "Be on your toes. Do not believe that just because the FDA has said a product is safe and effect that it is either safe or effective."

Sheldon Rampton, co-author of some of the most unflinching accounts of fraud and deception (Trust Us, We’re Experts and Toxic Sludge is Good for You) provides a detailed account of the mechanisms by which people are regularly deceived. Himself an "expert” on the workings of the PR industry and the deceptions that large corporations can inflict upon a trusting public, Rampart reminds us that things are not always as they appear and that the motivations of large corporations are generally not in the public’s best interest.

While aspartame was the single focus in "Sweet Misery:  A Poisoned World",  "Sweet Remedy" demonstrates that a corrupt flagship regulatory agency has given birth to numerous toxins in our food supply.

A closer examination of the U.S. corporate power structure unveils a two-fold approach to manipulating the public.  First, by attempting to shape public opinion and, second, by affecting an individual's ability to discern PR from the truth.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent selling neuro-toxic food additives to the public.  In the United States and through each nation within its global corporate grasp, maintaining a healthy mind and body is an act of civil disobediance.

Ultimately, healing has become the path of resistance for informed individuals improving their health.  We interview a host of MD's and Natural Health practitioners to gain the clearest possible perspective for a path to recovery.  Perhaps the sweetest remedy this film offers is the hope provided by witnessing a variety of groups as they withstand the confusion, casualties and obstacles involved with taking control of their food and their health.
